No it isn't fair when a big brother attitude with computers, based on an unregulated registration of credit details, results in harsh and grossly unfair decisions. Remember though, at the first point of acceptance, the lender sees the only reference they can access, how you pay your existing commitments, and the information they view is recorded on a shared basis. For example, a missed credit card payment for 1-3 days will be ignored by most companies while some will show you as making a late payment indicated by a 1 on your status file. An occasional 1 is generally not that serious. It is when those 1s become 3s that the lender suspects a serious intention not to pay or an inability to afford, solely from what the computer tells them. After any 3s the provider of that finance may try to take that person to court and ask that the judge insists a payment is made. The action becomes a county court judgement (CCJ).

The rate you will pay will reflect the risk that your lender perceives he is taking with someone in your circumstances and will also depend on the deposit you have available. For certain types of credit history, e.g. those involving bankruptcy, voluntary arrangements, debts of large amounts, a deposit of up to 25% will be required.
